I am looking forward to becoming a family with my fellow teammates and with the staff and children in Aleta Wondo. I am ecstatic and feel so blessed not only to have the opportunity to travel to Africa for my first time, but also to have an opportunity to practice medicine in an environment many physicians will never get to experience. I am excited to learn more about the field of medicine, as well as the culture of Ethiopia. I know this will be an invaluable experience in terms of furthering my studies as well as broadening my awareness of the medical and social needs of people at home and abroad

As a first year student I am still learning my way around the university and I’m looking for the opportunities that will not only be beneficial to my own education but ones to which I can be an active contributor. I am enrolled in the Global Health elective and I will travel to Ethiopia this summer as member of the Ethiopia Outreach student organization. I look forward to seeing how American trained physicians are attending to the needs of underdeveloped communities. As I progress in my medical training I expect that my contributions will become increasingly valuable.

Dr. Jonathan Karnes

As junior clinical faculty with UTHSCSA, I am inspired by the enthusiasm and goodwill of the students on the Ethiopia Outreach team. Early in my training, before I had any real practical skills in medicine, I went with some classmates and professors to a small town in central Ecuador where we partnered with members of the local health care community striving to meet the needs of patients in various resource poor settings. Now with a few more years of training and experience, I am grateful to walk alongside these students as we seek perspective about what doctoring means in Ethiopia and also in our own backyard.
